Research Log Entry 1
1.) How can the author, publisher , faculty members, library and student accommodate?
Everyone can accommodate by learning to distibute the books fairly and equally so that everyone can benefit in one way or another, it could involve a great deal of sharaing and sacrafice.

2.) How can a fair arrangement be achieved?
The author/ publisher can ethier sell or loan out their books to libraries and have students rent out the books for a small certain amount of money rather then buy at a high ridiculous price. The students would then pay and profits would go to the author/ publisher and maybe 5-10% can go to faculty members for accomodating the books in the first place.

3.) What are the challenges in creating a fair arrangement for everyone?
It could be a challenge for mostly everyone but mainly affecting the author, publishers and students. The biggest challenge is the money factor, since everyone is looking to save money and make money.

1.) How can a balance be achieved between protecting privacy and meeting the needs of national security?
Just knowing boundaries should be a must, but overall I feel like privacy protection currently is at a pretty stable state.

2.) How did you react to the list of challenged books (Suprised)? Do you think some books should be banned or should all books be freely avalilable? Why?
When I saw the list and read through it I was a bit disturbed to see what types of books had been banned. All the books seemed to have touched upon subjects that could very well be considered controversial. It seems to me that because these books were expressing their feelings about deep and sensitive issues that some may not be able to handle, they were deprived of being able to be free like any other book.
I believe that all books should be freely avalible because it is a basic act of freedom of speech, although the books may be upsetting to some and very controversial no one is forced to read these book, it is by mere choice and I believe everyone has the right to decide for themselves.

3.) How have your overall ideas about information ethics changed or not changed after completling this unit?
My overall idea on information ethics has grown rather than change because before this assignment I wasn't aware of the issue and it was never a big concern for me, but after doing the assignment I've learned alot about copyright and challenged books along with many other new things. I feel as if all books should be freely avalible and its good to keep the security of copyright at a high security level because its peoples work and it could very well affect their lives.

For my first seach I used the GEOBASE basic search

I type into the keyword box "Plate tectonic theory"

And a result of 188

For more specific and fewer results I revised my keywords and added the word "earth" at the beginning to make it more specific. "Earth plate tectonic theory"

5. Once you got your results to around 100 (or fewer), how did you determine they were meaningful?
I recieve a result of 58 after revising and I distinguished whether they meaningful by reviewing the titles then briefly reading the descriptons.

I retrieved a result of 898.

I used the helpful links to my left my computer and chose the link that read "lithospere" which then narrowed the reselt down to 129.

I read through the descriptive title to see which corresponded with the plates and the ground.

1.)I chose Britannica Online Subscription Database for my first seach

2.)I Use the term "Plate Tectonic" to keep it simple since I was afraid that it may not have conducted the search correctly since I tried other terms and it gave me no results.

3.)I retrieved 1 result being titled "Open Geology Journal"

4.)Not neccessary since I only had a result of 1

5.)I determined that the result was meaningful because it was the only for one and also I clicked on the title and read the description to check its liability.

7.)I determined this article was meaningful because I read through it and it gave me a couple of links which touched upon my subject and related to the types of information I had in mind. It also corresponed to tectonic theories I've learned about before but just more in depth


Second Data Base
1.) I entered the same terms as in the first database which was "Plate Tectonics" I was expecting not as many that had actually turned up.

2.)I recieved a result of 2,467 which is alot more than I expected.

3.)I refined my search as "Plate tectonics theory" which narrowed the search down to a result of 51.

4.) I noticed that I had to think more indepthly of what I wanted to search for because I realized that there are many branches of where plate tectonics can fall under, whether its dealing with earthquakes or volcanoes. So I just focused on the tectonic cycle itself.

5.) I determined the results meaningful by connecting it to the pate tectonic theory and what I already knew. Common sense of just interconnecting.

7.) I determined this article was meaningful because it touched upon the plate tectonic theory while elaborating on the rocks which is an important portion of plate tectonics. The abstract description gave me a sense of what the article was about.

3. The difference between the three article are the obviously the topics and the way their written. It went from an industrial trade advertisment to a science article to a scientific scholarly study journal.
   
   
4. The major difference difference among the periodicals was the way the three different types were structured. The Times was more of an industrial advertisment book, it seemed as if the book was trying to sell. The Chemical and Engineering News was more of informative science felt topics with facts and statistics to inform people with news and events. And finally the Journal of Comparative Psyhcology was a journal which carried the study of a certain subject and contained research and evidence compressed into a journal.

   I used the words "Plate" AND "tectonics" which gave me a result of 170.

   Well I first chose the first result from my keyword search which was titled Formation and applications of the sedimentary record in arc collision zones, which then led me to click the similar items tab. I then chose the subject heading 'Plate Tectonic'. I felt it was best since it was exactly what I have chosen for my keyword search.

   I eventually chose the book title Biogeography and plate tectonics because it sounded as if it were to give just the basic explanation of what plate tectonic are and then some.

   I chose the quote "Plate tectonics" because those were my key words and I figured it would give me the information I was aiming for and grant me the basic background without irrelavent information I didnt need.

   The reference books are specific to the topic I was searching for and they have indepth information to my search rather than regular books in the stack.

   The information could have came from hundreds and hundreds of years ago since reseach take relativley a large amount of time to consume information and accurate information at that.

5. a) It didn't give me an actual number of the results but I had more pages than the keyword search which gave me two pages with 57 results.
   b) As I examined the the subect heading it did indeed give me a more specific search result rather than the keyword search. It gave me a wider selection and more specific range with titles and wordings
   c) I believe this occured because of the the adavanced keyword search lead it to the subject heading search which went more indepth and deeeper.
   
   
6. The difference between a keyword search and a subject heading search is that the keyword search sparks and starts off the search from the ground up whereas the subject heading has results within itself already so it works its way up from there which can intesify the search and go more indepth from there
